Selective adsorption of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions using a Cr(VI)-imprinted polymer supported by magnetic multiwall carbon nanotubes

A novel ion imprinted polymer (IIP) on the surface of magnetic multiwall carbon nanotubes (MMWCNTs) was prepared through precipitation polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine as the complexing monomer, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate as the co-monomer, the Cr(VI) anion as the template, and ethylene glycol di methacrylate as the cross-linker in the presence of magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes as the magnetic component. This novel synthesized sorbent was characterized by using different techniques. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption conditions, selectivity, and reusability. Removal parameters such as contact time, pH, and sorbent dosage were optimized. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 56.1 mg(Cr(VI)) g−1(polymer) and the adsorption equilibrium reached in about 30 min. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order equation and the Langmuir adsorption model. The selectivity studies indicated that the synthesized sorbent had a high single selectivity sorption for the Cr(VI) ions in the presence of competing ions.
