Please turn off the lights: Cr³⁺ ions were selectively attached to the single-stranded overhang region on a hairpin DNA to serve as atom-sized quenchers of fluorescein for molecular beacons (see figure). The resulting molecular beacons had a sub-nanomolar detection limit and could detect a single nucleotide mismatch in a 13-nucleotide DNA sequence.
