Ultrahigh strength of ultrafine grained austenitic stainless steel induced by accumulative rolling and annealing

An ultrafine grained austenitic stainless steel sample (with average grain size of 270 nm) was prepared by means of accumulative rolling and annealing treatment. Uniaxial tensile tests at room temperature showed the ultrafine grained sample exhibits an extremely high yield strength of 1870 ± 50 MPa and a tensile strength as high as 1950 ± 30 MPa, while the elongation retains 6 ± 1%. The deformation has been dominated by twinning and slip of partial dislocations.
