The chemical reduction of alkyl, aryl, and benzyl selenocyanates, as masked selenols, using Rongalite is investigated. As a result, the corresponding diselenides were obtained selectively in very good to excellent yields. Additionally, a simple methodology is described using the in-situ generated benzyl selenolate anion to promote nucleophilic substitution, epoxide ring opening, and Michael addition reactions.
