Metasurfaces for edge encoding with incoherent light

Now, Brandon Swartz and colleagues at Vanderbilt University and the Naval Surface Warfare Center have demonstrated broadband and large-aperture metasurface edge encoders for incoherent infrared radiation (B. T. Swartz et al., Sci. Adv. 10, eadk0024; 2024).

The low-noise optical edge detection of real-world scenes (see images) was enabled by wavefront shaping via a 24-mm aperture metasurface with a refractive lens. The metasurface was inverse-designed for effective Laplacian-based edge detection in the 7.5-to-13.5-μm long-wave infrared wavelength region.
