A new synthesis approach to Co3O4 from spent lithium-ion battery is presented. With the aid of an oxalic acid-based DES, the Co3O4 catalyst is successfully fabricated. The versatile application of Co3O4 is highlighted by electrochemical conversion of raw PET bottles into high-purity formic acid and terephthalic acid products under ambient conditions.
