A novel arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) was identified and rationally engineered to improve the catalytic activity. The resultant mutant was then utilized in the transformation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) to N-acetyl-5-hydroxytryptamine (NAS), enabling a 99 % conversion and an 80 % yield.
