Wearable Technology in Clinical Practice for Depressive Disorder

To the Editor: Fedor et al. (Dec. 28 issue)1 review a topic of growing interest: the potential of wearable devices to gather objective measures to aid in the treatment of depression. However, in psychiatry, we posit that subjectivity plays a primary role in treatment2; the evaluation of depression is more complex than a simple sum of symptoms.3,4 Furthermore, medication that is commonly used to treat depression can produce changes that make it difficult to assess the patient’s true clinical status.4 For example, sleep, one subject of the review article, may be one of the factors most affected during the treatment . . .
