The most abundant structural protein in the locust mandible (CPH-1) was identified and revealed to be vital for the reinforcement of mandible cuticles. CPH-1 can self-assemble into an extraordinarily stiff film, which outperforms most protein-based materials. This study not only represents a universal reinforcing mechanism of insect cuticle but also provides a potent starting material for sustainable materials.
