Multifunctional coatings of graphene oxide: New membranes for proton permeation and salt rejection

A biomolecule-surfactant co-assembly is developed, allowing for the universal modification of G-O, MXene, and MoS nanosheets. The resulting membranes feature abundant nitrogen/oxygen groups within confined 2D nanochannels. These groups form a hydrogen bond network with the water molecules and undergo protonation inside the channels in acidic conditions, functioning as proton-hopping sites. The increased binding affinity toward salt cations effectively blocks the cations. Notably, exceptional water stability for 400 h in desalination with a 99% NaCl rejection rate is achieved.
