Protein nanopores are an established technology for nucleic acid sequencing. There has also been recent progress in using nanopores for amino acid sequencing and profiling post-translational modifications of proteins, but such developments lag for glycans. Zhang et al. have now demonstrated that it is possible to distinguish between disaccharides using a modified protein nanopore based on Mycobacterium smegmatis porin A (MspA) and machine learning to analyze the data.
