Transient structuring of liquids using dissipative interfacial assemblies

Surfactants trapped at a liquid-liquid interface can allow non-equilibrium liquid geometries and solid-like interfacial mechanical behavior. Here, we use dissipative chemical energy to enable these surfactant interfacial assemblies to reconfigure them, changing their shape and properties at a prescribed time. This structured liquid system is adaptive without the need for an external stimulus and generates liquid compartments that destabilize after a certain lifetime, initiating coalescence, mixing, or release of chemicals set to a built-in chemical timer.
