Men with obesity can experience several medical and psychological issues, including sexual dysfunction and a reduction of testosterone levels. Bariatric surgery has been proposed to ameliorate sexual function in these men, but data are scarce. In a prospective study, hormonal levels, semen parameters and sexual libido were assessed in 20 men before and 6 months after bariatric surgery. No differences in semen parameters were observed. However, a significant increase in the total levels of testosterone was reported (P = 0.009). Hormone levels (FSH and LH) did not change after the operation, but the overall score from the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire significantly improved (P = 0.011), indicating that bariatric surgery improves sexual performance in these men.
