In the inaugural issue of Anatomical Sciences Education (ASE), published in January 2008, co-Editors-in-Chief, Dr. Rick Drake and Dr. Wojciech Pawlina, outlined a vision for the journal to become the “preferred place where anatomy educators can find the best work produced by their colleagues, and the broader education community can see and appreciate achievements in our field.”1 To say that this vision was realized is an understatement. Sixteen years later, ASE remains the destination journal for the exchange of ideas, opinions, innovations, and research on topics related to education in the anatomical sciences.

In 2023, when I assumed the role of ASE's stewardship, it was an honor and a privilege to take charge of a journal ranked as the second-best science education journal. This recognition is a direct result of the tireless dedication of Drs. Drake and Pawlina, and they deserve our heartfelt gratitude for a job impeccably executed. Equally, our global community of anatomy educators and education researchers continues to push the boundaries of innovation in remarkable ways. They consistently provide us with a constant stream of high-quality anatomy education research and scholarship, for which we are deeply appreciative. As ASE continues to evolve, it must adapt to the changing landscape of medical education to remain the foremost journal for all aspects of anatomy education.

This is why I am enthused about the tireless efforts of our Editorial Board in the previous year and the promising developments for 2024. In 2023, we embarked on a visual rebranding initiative to align the journal's aesthetics with the other two journals published by the American Association for Anatomy: The Anatomical Record and Developmental Dynamics. While this effort has allowed us to create visually striking cover art for the journal, the substantial changes occurred within its pages. To recap, in 2023, our top priorities for ASE were:
  1. Increasing the transparency and efficiency of the peer review process.
  2. Accelerating the post-acceptance production timeline.
  3. Broadening the scope of the journal.

I am pleased to report that while submissions and the number of published papers increased by over 40% in 2023 compared with the previous year—our highest volume for both metrics, excluding the COVID-19-related surge in 2021—our peer review process is becoming more efficient. The time from submission to online publication was reduced by 33% in 2023, and our prodcution time after article acceptance was reduced by 66%. We are optimistic about further reducing peer-review and production times while maintaining the high quality that our authors and readers expect. Additionally, we have started publishing more papers on the history and ethics of anatomy and anatomy education in non-medical contexts, thereby expanding the journal's scope. There is still more work to do, but we are certainly on the right track.

What is on the horizon for 2024 is even more exciting. We are pleased to announce that this year, we will publish nine issues, a departure from the six issues we have consistently published since 2008. Furthermore, we are set to increase the frequency to 12 issues in 2025 and beyond. In addition to regular issues, readers can anticipate more frequent special issues covering topics of universal interest to anatomy educators, such as artificial intelligence in anatomy education, the intersection of anatomy and spirituality, psychometrics, and qualitative research methods in health sciences, among others. We encourage you to keep an eye out for these special issues and, if you have an idea for one that you would like to see, please reach out to me or any of the Associate Editors. Finally, we are excited to announce that we will be adding more Associate Editors to our Editorial Board and expanding our Board of Reviewers to better handle the expected increase in manuscript submissions. If you are interested in either of these roles, please contact our editorial office at ase@anatomy.org, and we would be delighted to discuss it with you.

As we embark on this new year with a bright future for ASE, I am reminded of the words of Fred Rogers, the host and producer of the renowned American children's program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood: “Imagining something may be the first step in making it happen, but it takes the real time and real efforts of real people to learn things, make things, turn thoughts into deeds, or visions into inventions.”2 We extend our gratitude to all of you who continue to learn, create, and transform your ideas into innovative developments in anatomical education. This is dedicated to you.
