Cross-sectional studies have indicated that individuals from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) with chronic hepatitis B are a potential risk group for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). An international multicentre retrospective cohort study of individuals of SSA or Afro-Surinamese ethnicity or descent with chronic hepatitis B in the UK, Netherlands and Spain has examined the incidence of HCC in this population. Individuals of SSA or Afro-Surinamese ethnicity or descent had a 5-year and 10-year cumulative HCC risk of 1% and 2.4%, respectively. Importantly, the 10-year HCC risk was negligible for individuals without advanced fibrosis at baseline (0.7% versus 12.1% for individuals with advanced fibrosis) and for those with low baseline modified PAGE-B score (risk score for predicting HCC; 0.5% versus 2.9% in the intermediate and 15.9% in the high risk according to modified PAGE-B score).
