Cheap, nontoxic Bi2O3 absorbs light in the visible region. It catalyzes the formation of aryl radicals when irradiated by visible light. In contrast to semiconductors like TiO2, Bi2O3 allows low catalyst loadings (1 to 5 mol-%), even on 10 mmol scale. Arylations with Bi2O3 are chemoselective, allow in situ preparation of the starting diazonium salt, and give the products in moderate to good yields.
