Some sweeteners show a synergistic enhancement of perceived sweetness when they are tasted as binary mixtures. In this issue ofCell Chemical Biology,Behrens et al. (2017)find that a surprising explanation for this classic observation may lie in their reciprocal inhibition of bitter taste receptors.
