Major report backs overhaul of US dietary guideline process

The process for updating the US national dietary guidelines should be comprehensively redesigned, with more rigorous evaluation of the evidence and greater transparency, concludes a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.1 The Dietary Guidelines for Americans , issued every five years, are hugely influential in driving nutrition policy in the United States and worldwide. However, they have been heavily criticized in recent years, and concerns have been raised in the US Congress about their trustworthiness. In 2015 The BMJ ran a highly critical review saying that the expert report underpinning the dietary guidelines failed to take account of all the relevant scientific evidence.2 In response, more than 180 researchers, including all the members of the 2015 guideline committee, signed a letter calling on The BMJ to retract the article.
