Break the flow: Alkane/alkene separations are probably the most cost-intensive separations today. This review discusses the principles and advantages of adsorptive separation by using zeolites and metal–organic frameworks. Both experimental and theoretical studies are outlined to highlight the challenges and opportunities in C4 separation, with a focus on the separation mechanisms and structure–selectivity correlations.
