A facile method for the preparation of ceramic beads with hierarchical porosity

Abstract In this work a phase inversion method is effectively applied towards the formation of technical ceramics such as mm sized yttria stabilized zirconia beads. For the first time yttria stabilized zirconia spherical beads of uniform mm size diameter and hierarchical porosity are prepared by a simple one pot method utilizing phase inversion and templating synthesis. Solvent exchange and subsequent thermal treatment developed an open porous network of radial hierarchical porosity. Multimodal pore size distribution ranging within 3 orders of magnitude was identified and porosity values up to 74% were measured.
