Thermosensitive DEA/DMA Copolymer Nanogel: Low Initiator Induced Synthesis and Structural Colored Colloidal Array’s Optical Properties

Abstract Monodisperse, tunable thermosensitive copolymer N , N -diethylacrylamide (DEA) and N , N -dimethylacrylamide (DMA) nanogels with up to 40 wt% of highly hydrophilic comonomer DMA have been prepared. The effect of synthesis parameters on the formulation of the nanogels as a function of monomer composition, surfactant concentration, initiator concentration, and crosslinker concentration are studied systematically. It is found that monodisperse DEA/DMA nanogels with a high composition of the hydrophilic DMA monomer are only synthesized at a very low initiator concentration, while an increasing initiator concentration lead to the formation of precipitates soon after polymerization. Brilliant colloidal crystals are assembled from the above monodisperse polyDEA and DEA/DMA nanogel by using the high temperature evaporation method. Both the monomer DMA composition and polymer concentration affect the structural colors (or λ max ). Furthermore, these hydrophilic nanogels are found to be resistant to protein adsorption, setting the way for promising applications to biosensor/biotechnology, such as drug delivery, and electrophoretic DNA sequencing.
