An elegant stepwise metalation of 1,2-bis(phosphonyl)ferrocene and subsequent reactions with organotin halides gave access to 1,2,3-tri- and 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted ferrocene derivatives. These show intramolecular P=OSn interactions and serve as starting materials for further derivatizations giving, for example, organostannylium salts such as 11.
