T here is no sugarcoating this: diabetes is a major risk factor for developing numerous cardiovascular complications and for greater risk of adverse outcomes once these complications ensue. Despite dramatic advancements in the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD) complications and unequivocal overall improvements in cardiovascular outcomes over the past several decades, the excess hazard of worse CVD outcomes associated with diabetes persists (1). Atrial fibrillation (AF), a common and increasingly prevalent condition in patients with diabetes, is no exception. In the Framingham study, with >38 years of followup, diabetes was associated with a 50% increase in development of AF (2). During a mean follow-up of 14.5 years in the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study, persons with versus those without diabetes developed AF at rates of 9.0 versus 4.5 per 1,000 person-years, respectively (3); similar reports of association between diabetes and increased risk of AF
