How to be active: The activity of Ni/ZrO2 catalysts for the dry reforming of methane is enhanced by activation and regeneration of the catalyst in the presence of CO2. In situ X-ray absorption and FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO show that an increased metal–support interface created during CO2 treatment opens an additional pathway for CO2 activation and provides labile oxygen species for carbon removal.
