It is a little known fact that the first description of the adverse health effects of asbestos exposure was made by women in 1898. Lucy Deane (born July 31, 1865, in Madras, India) was one of the first female inspectors of factories appointed in Great Britain and a firm supporter of the women's suffrage movement. She worked in close collaboration with Adelaide Anderson (born in 1863, Melbourne, Australia), who was also a suffragist. The Factory Inspectorate had been established by the 1833 Factories Act to prevent injury and excessive work in child textile workers.
