Sepsis is a major cause of illness and death worldwide,1 and has a complex and heterogeneous disease process that is associated with or caused by a variety of microorganisms and sources of infection. This heterogeneity manifests as a diversity of host responses that occur in different patients,2–4 making therapeutic management challenging. Evidence-based clinical guidelines for prevention, early identification, and management of sepsis are the only tools available for reducing sepsis prevalence and sepsis-related deaths.
