Heat shield: A major hurdle in using trehalose, a nontoxic disaccharide, as a cellular protectant for mammalian cells is its lack of cell permeability. Esterified trehalose analogues deliver high concentrations of trehalose into mammalian cells. Importantly, two of these analogues prevent Jurkat cells from initiating apoptosis after heat shock.
