Magnificent magnesium: Conventional artificial graphite is made at 3000 °C from graphitizable precursors. We present a method of making graphite from renewable hard carbon resources— at much lower temperatures (800 to 1000 °C) in the presence of a Mg catalyst. The catalyzed graphite is highly crystalline and is composed of special Voronoi-tessellated structure.
