Harris Solomon's study of everyday dietary health and illness in Mumbai, India, depicts a landscape of intersections: wealth with poverty, starvation with satiety, body with environment. Metabolic Living—the book's title as well as its core heuristic—pertains to the idea that bodies and surroundings are always absorbing one another; twisting insides out, outsides in, and destabilising the finitude of knowledge. The innovative force of the heuristic of metabolic living lies in how it makes evident the inadequacy of efforts to understand the causes of healthy metabolism by analysing individual variables.
