Why do obesity rates continue to grow to such sizeable proportions despite substantial efforts from the global health community and governments to address, educate, and implement policies to tackle the obesity epidemic? Are people not listening, feel powerless to change, or railing against being told what to do? The “official story” of obesity, says author Helene A Shugart, derives from the “calories in, calories out” rhetoric—we consume more than we burn. According to this story, she says, obesity is a choice, and we are personally responsible for our weight.
