Remote Sensing Green pixels in remote sensing data that estimate plant production can tell us much about Earth's ecosystems. However, one needs to know what proportion of the surface captured by the pixel is actually vegetated. Badgley et al. developed a method based on near-infrared reflectance of terrestrial vegetation (NIRV) to assess the proportion of a pixel that is vegetated. NIRV's ease of calculation and its applicability to decades of moderate-resolution remote sensing data will help to quantify agricultural and natural ecosystem responses to climate and land-use change.
