Wenzhen Fu Professor Synthetic Biology & Synthetic Chemistry
Dr. Wenzhen Fu was born in Shangqiu, Henan province, China. He obtained his B.S. in Chemistry from Zhengzhou University, where he did his undergraduate research with Prof. Wenjun Tang @ SIOC and Prof. Guanyu Yang. During his undergraduate studies, Wenzhen also carried out summer research on organic synthesis with Prof. Hongmin Liu at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences; he also worked with Prof. Yunyin Niu on supermolecular chemistry for 2 years. Wenzhen received his Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences under the guidance of Prof. Wenjun Tang. At SIOC, Wenzhen focused on asymmetric transition metal catalysis and ligand design. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher with Prof. James Turkson and Prof. Marcus A. Tius at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center and Department of Chemistry, University of Hawaii at Manoa, focusing on the design and synthesis of small molecular STAT3 inhibitors. He then moved to the University of California, Santa Barbara, working with Prof. Yang Yang, focusing on new-to-nature biocatalysis. Dr. Fu started his independent career in the School of Pharmacy at China Pharmaceutical University in January 2025. The Fu group mainly focuses on the design and development of synthetically useful biotransformations by integrating synthetic chemistry, synthetic biology, and protein engineering for the biomanufacturing of pharmaceuticals and value-added fine chemicals.
