Natalia Belfiore specializes in ecology, with emphasis on conservation and population genetics. She has worked in temperate and tropical settings, studying a variety of animal species in the wild. Her overarching interest is in better understanding the effects of environmental change and variation on wild populations through the use of genetic marker data.

Belfiore is active in both applied and basic research aspects of her field. She is a co-author on 15 peer-reviewed publications, including one book chapter, with two papers currently in review. Her research activities have taken various turns in postdoctoral and contract work since completion of her Ph.D., but continue to involve the use of genetic marker data to understand environmental variation. She has also been involved in applied activities, specifically, planning for conservation activies in the face of climate change in East Africa. She has been involved in her community of scholars in numerous ways over the years, including an active schedule of peer review, working with minority undergraduate science students through organizations such as SACNAS, and writing articles and newsletters to enhance the postdoctoral experience.
