BIOSEPARATIONS: Our group has developed the first circulating fluidized bed ion exchange chromatography system in the world (US Patents 6716334 B1 and 6887386 B2) in 2004/5 for truly continuous, uninterrupted ion exchange which can be scaled up or down. This technology (renamed CFIX) is currently under licence to a local company (Renix Inc. www.renix.ca ) and has been demonstrated for protein and organic acid extraction and research is in progress on a number of different applications for biopharmaceuticals or bio-energy funded by the NSERC Idea to Innovation Grant, Western Innovation Fund and NSERC Strategic Special Project Grants and the NSERC ENGAGE grant. A recent example: We have also successfully demonstrated the recovery of SOY PROTEINS from SOY POWDER using this pilot scale LSCFB ion-exchanger technology. Organically processed Soy Protein does not undergo any pH change or precipitation during extraction under mild conditions and thus is expected to retain the functionalities of native soy proteins. This technology will lead to more functional soy proteins for the food industry. INTEGRATED AND CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES USING BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS: My research group is actively focussed on the culturing of micro-algae in pilot scale photo-bioreactors using effluent from on farm biogas digesters and other nutrient streams to produce clean water and mitigate CO2 generated from an on site co gen power plant. The research is funded by an NSERC Strategic Grant and OMAFRA BIOSENSORS AND BIOLOGICAL TRANSDUCERS: We have developed innovative technologies for biosensor design using bacteriorhodopsin as a platform. Smart valves and actuators based on this protein have also been investigated.
