Dr. Mark Harrison joined the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in August 2014 at the rank of assistant professor in sustainable health care, a position affiliated with the Collaboration for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE). In this role, Dr. Harrison advances research, education, and practices in economic principles of health care sustainability with a focus on the role of pharmacy and pharmaceutical treatments in effecting change. Dr. Harrison holds a first class honours degree in business and management sciences from the University of Bradford, UK, master's degree in epidemiology from the University of Edinburgh, and PhD from the University of Manchester. He began his research career with the Arthritis Research UK Epidemiology Unit at the University of Manchester in 2002, focusing on the variation in service provision and treatment outcomes in people with rheumatoid arthritis, drug safety and the evaluation of treatment strategies. Following the completion of his PhD, he worked at the Manchester Centre for Health Economics at the University of Manchester on a range of projects with academic, governmental, and industry partners. He also served as an adviser for the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Research Design Service for North West England. Dr. Harrison has a strong publication record with over 30 publications, 20 as lead author.

Dr. Harrison's main methodological and research interests lie in the measurement and valuation of health, health technology and policy assessment, and preferences for healthcare interventions. His research focuses on the evaluation and re-evaluation of the type of healthcare that is provided, the point in the treatment pathway, and the way in which it is delivered. Before joining UBC, Dr. Harrison was involved with various initiatives at the University of Manchester, including evaluating the impact of incentive schemes to improve the quality of primary care on hospitalizations, patient-reported outcome measures to evaluate treatment outcomes, understanding treatment preferences, and the communication of risk and uncertainty to users of the health care system.
