Dr. John Reynolds was appointed to his role of Associate Vice-President (Research) in August 2013. Reynolds received his PhD in Immunology at the Australian National University, Canberra, in 1976. He did postdoctoral work at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, UK and in 1979 he became a member of the Basel Institute for Immunology, Switzerland. In 1983 Reynolds joined the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor in Physiology and Biophysics. During his tenure, Reynolds has served as Head of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy (1999-2004) and Associate Dean Basic Research (2005-2013) in the Faculty of Medicine.

Reynolds’ research is focused on the development and selection of B-lymphocytes, including mechanisms that allow the survival of those B lymphocytes that recognize foreign antigens and the destruction of B lymphocytes that recognize self-antigens. He has been active in the Canadian Society for Immunology (CSI) since 1983, serving as President and organizer of several annual conferences. His contributions to the CSI were recognized in 2008 by the creation of the John D Reynolds Award, which is an annual award for outstanding contributions to the CSI. He has also served as Chair of the Gastrointestinal Research Group (1989-91) and the Immunology Research Group (1992-1996), and Director of the Flow Cytometry Lab (2002-2014). Reynolds has also been a member of the boards of Research Canada since 2012, plus Innovate Calgary and the ASTech Foundation since 2013. He is Executive Director of Research Services, co-chair of the USER taskforce and CSIG and a member of many committees at the University of Calgary.
