Chemical Biology Materials Chemistry

Our research group studies electron transfer reactions using classical electrochemical methods and scanning electrochemical microscopy. We use these methods in combination with biochemical methods, such as flow cytometry and cell culture, to study transport events in and out of human cancer cells. We are particularly interested in developing analytical methods to quantify multidrug resistance. A second active area in our group is the study of corrosion of magnesium alloys used in the automotive industry. This national team project is partially financed by General Motors of Canada and strives to predict corrosion of magnesium alloys with complex microstructure and reactivity. Our projects lie at the interface between biological chemistry, analytical chemistry and materials science. They provide students with extensive training in electrochemistry, microscopy, nanoelectrode design, biochemistry, numerical simulations and analytical method development.
