个人简介

I completed my degree in medicine at the University of Calgary in 1982 and have been practicing in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, Canada as a comprehensive family physician since 1984. I became involved with the University of Alberta as site director in Red Deer for the new rural stream family medicine residency program in the year 2000. Since then I have become increasingly involved with teaching family medicine at the postgraduate level. In 2008, I took on the role of “Rural Program Director,” in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta. In that role I became full time faculty, although my clinical work remains in Sylvan Lake. I am the first “geographic full time equivalent” member in the Faculty of Medicine to have his home base and clinical practice outside of Edmonton. I became Director of Rural and Regional Health in the Division of Community Engagement in 2011. I have been recognized for my work through a number of awards including “Outstanding Clinician of the Year” for the David Thompson Health Region in the year 2000, Family Physician Fellowship Award from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2002 and an award for excellence in clinical teaching in the year 2002/3. I also received Citizen of the Year Award in Sylvan Lake in the year 2000. In 2009 I received a Fellowship from the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada in recognition of for contributions to rural medicine. My personal interests include kayaking, art (watercolour, digital and zen tangles) and music including playing alto saxophone and until 2014 played in Jazz Explosion (a Red Deer Community Jazz Band).

Academic interests and research interests include medical education, especially rural medical education. I am always seeking innovative and creative ways to further rural medical education, support a widely distributed faculty and deliver teaching/ education in ways that do not involve travel.
