个人简介

Dave graduated in microbiology and subsequently studied for a PhD in the ‘Regulation of enzyme levels in methylotrophic Candida spp’ at University of Wales, College Cardiff. This led to postdoctoral research at Leeds University involving the protein engineering of yeast alcohol oxidases. Upon arrival at the University of Wolverhampton in the 1980s consultancy interests were developed in biodegradation and subsequently research into the control of intestinal bacterial pathogens in the environment, intestinal tract, and food industry. More recently he has expanded his interest in environmental microbiology and the development of biopolymers with Dr Radecka. Over the years he has established numerous links with local and national companies providing consultancy and research support in a variety of microbiological aspects. In addition to research and consultancy, various aspects of microbiology are taught on a range of courses at undergraduate and master’s levels.

Dave's main interests are : • The growth, survival and control of gastrointestinal (GI) pathogens (eg Campylobacter , Salmonella, E.coli, Listeria, Helicobacter) in aquatic systems, foods, surfaces, and in the GI tract • The roles of microorganisms in pollution control. This has involved research and collaborations including: • Antimicrobial plant extracts (especially essential oils of herbs and spices) – effect upon gastrointestinal bacteria; control of food spoilage; factors affecting efficacy (including synergy with other antimicrobial agents and environmental factors) • Microbial attachment to surfaces, formation of biofilms and factors affecting subsequent cleaning and disinfection • Development of antimicrobial coatings / surfaces – incorporation of antimicrobials into polymers and subsequent evaluation • Bacterial synthesis of poly-gamma-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) and its environmental application. • Bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons in contaminated soils Dave is currently involved in the supervision of three PhD students and 2 Knowledge Transfer Associates
