Hazel studied her BSc (Hons) Applied Biology (sandwich) degree at Trent Polytechnic and, following placement experience, pursued an interest in microbiology through a PhD at Warwick University on bacterial attachment and biofilm formation partially funded by Campden and Chorleywood Food and Drink Research (CCFRA). This led to working as a research scientist for CCFRA involving research, consultancy and training for the food industry, and further developing interest and expertise in applied microbiology, particularly in the assessment, removal and inactivation of attached micro-organisms. Hazel joined the University of Wolverhampton in 1996 and is Senior Lecturer in Microbiology. Her teaching includes general microbiology, in particular food microbiology and safety, which has led to responsibility for the development of a new BSc (Hons) Environmental Health course. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Hazel has developed her research interests through supervision of three PhD projects (two in collaboration with CCFRA) investigating the attachment and inactivation of food-borne pathogens including Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli and E. coli O157, and the investigation of the effect of environmental stresses such as acids and detergents on the susceptibility of attached bacteria to disinfectants. Other research has included a two-year Food Standards Agency-funded research project to investigate the effectiveness of pre-milking teat cleaning techniques.
