Alternative sources of Long chain Omega 3 fatty acids Arachidonic acid, EPA and DHA and human health Lipid Metabolism Biomarkers of inflammation Lipidomics The main goal of my studies is to compare the impact of equivalent doses of EPA and DHA fed either as fish oils or vegetable oil on plasma and tissue fatty acid enrichment and vascular performance in both a rodent model and a human pilot study. Also, given the importance of lipid mediators as biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation and resolution of inflammation, my research it is focused into develop a method for the analysis of several of these biomarkers in biological samples. These results are expected to give us a first insight of the physiological impact of plant derived long chain n-3 PUFA and a better understanding on lipid metabolism. At present, I also co-lead Objective 4 of the BBSRC ISP, known as COB Study (n=240 participants, 2013-2014). COB is the first comprehensive investigation of the impact of age, sex, genetic make-up and gut microflora composition on flavonoids’ absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination in humans. We expect the results obtained in this study to significantly advance our current understanding of factors which modulate flavonoid absorption and metabolism and provide insight into which individuals are most likely to benefit from increased flavonoid and fruits and vegetable intake.
