Phonons in Quantum Materials The quantized atomic vibrations, or phonons, is central to the structural and electronic behaviors in condensed matter. Phonons govern both the correlation properties in the ground states such as ferroelectricity and superconductivity, and the transport properties in the excited non-equilibrium phenomena like thermoelectricity and photovoltaics. We experimentally investigate the basic science of phonons in quantum materials to engineer the next-generation circuits and power plants. Ultrafast and Nonlinear Spectroscopy The color of light is more than just aesthetic. Electromagnetic waves with frequencies spanning from GHz (mircrowave) to EHz (X-ray) are capable of selectively probing and manipulating the motion of electrons and atoms, as well as multi-particle collision and nonlinear mixing, with Heisenberg-limited spatial and temporal resolution. We leverage the state-of-the-art light sources to reveal and optimize the charge and energy transfer process in energy and medical nanomaterials. Pico-Electromechanical Materials and Devices Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) are ubiquitous in modern life: cell phones, cars, anywhere we need to precisely detect and control mechanical movements. Similar to the scaling law in electronics, MEMS have experienced tremendous reduction of cost and power consumption due to the miniaturization. We study the electromechanics of atomically thin materials for the design and fabrication of ultra-compact sensors and actuators in the Internet of Things.
