Zhichao Zhou is a Distinguished Professor and doctoral advisor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Shenzhen University. He received his Bachelor's and Ph.D. degrees from Wuhan University and The University of Hong Kong, respectively. From 2017 to 2023, he conducted postdoctoral research at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and later served as an Assistant Scientist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on deep-sea hydrothermal microbiomes and viromes.
He has made significant contributions in the areas of environmental microbial/viral omics analysis methods and microbe/virus-driven carbon and sulfur cycling. He has published over 50 SCI-indexed papers (including over 20 as first or co-first author) in high-impact journals such as Nature Microbiology, Nature Reviews Microbiology, The ISME Journal (4 papers), Nature Communications (1 co-first author), Microbiome (1 first author, 1 co-first), and FEMS Microbiology Reviews. He has an H-index of 31 and nearly 4,600 citations.
Dr. Zhou has received multiple honors, including the 2024 SiYuan-Ocean Emerging Leaders, 2024 National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (Overseas), the nomination for the Youth Scientist of Marine Power Award, and the Guangdong Pearl River Talent Program for Young Scholars. He previously served as President of the Wuhan University Alumni Association in Wisconsin and as a presidium member of the Alliance of Overseas Alumni Associations of Hubei Universities.
