Sustainable Biomanufacturing of Bioplastic Precursors and Bioplastics

Submission deadline:  15 October 2025

This Special Issue delves into the fundamental and applied engineering aspects of the production and application of bioplastic precursors and bioplastics. It aims to present cutting-edge research and fundamental engineering principles pertaining to the synthesis, separation, purification, and application of enabling technologies. The production of bioplastic precursors (such as 3-hydroxypropionic acid, itaconic acid, muconic acid, adipic acid, etc.) and bioplastics (such as polyhydroxyalkanoates) from renewable feedstocks will guarantee supply chains, reduce reliance on nonrenewable sources, support rural economies, and foster sustainability within the industry. However, adopting novel production pathways may pose challenges due to intricate supply chains involving diverse stakeholders. We welcome original research articles and reviews that focus on bioplastic precursors and bioplastics produced by various wide-type or engineered microorganisms.

本专刊深入探讨生物塑料及前体生产及应用中的基础与工程问题,旨在呈现前沿研究成果及核心工程原理,涵盖合成、分离、纯化等关键技术的开发与应用。利用可再生原料生产生物塑料前体(如3-羟基丙酸、衣康酸、粘液酸、己二酸等)及生物塑料(如聚羟基脂肪酸酯),可确保供应链稳定、减少对非可再生资源的依赖、支持农村经济发展并推动行业可持续发展。然而,新型生产工艺的采用可能面临复杂供应链协调等方面的挑战。本专刊诚邀聚焦于野生型或工程微生物生产生物塑料或前体的原创性研究及综述文章。

  • Develop novel upstream pretreatment methods that minimize the consumption of chemical and water resources.
  • Explore the utilization of waste feedstocks such as lignocellulosic biomass, food/dairy waste, CO2, and other organic materials as raw materials for pretreatment and fermentation processes.
  • Engineer microorganisms to develop robust biosystems capable of fermenting C6/C5 sugars present in the hydrolysates of agricultural and food waste.
  • Downstream process development and intensification incorporating cost-effective and sustainable separation strategies (e.g., simultaneous fermentation and separation systems) to recover and purify bioproducts.
  • Conduct comprehensive technoeconomic and life-cycle assessments to evaluate the economic viability and environmental impact of the proposed strategies.
  • Explore the development of bioplastic precursors and bioplastics for packaging, agricultural, and 3D printing applications.

(2)探索利用废弃物(如木质纤维素生物质)、食品/乳品废料、二氧化碳及其他有机材料作为预处理与发酵原料

  • (3)工程化微生物构建高效生物系统,实现农业及食品废弃物水解液中C6/C5糖的发酵转化

  • (4)开发集成化下游工艺,采用经济环保的分离策略(如同步发酵与分离系统)实现生物基产品的回收与纯化

  • (5)开展全面的技术经济与生命周期评估,量化新型生产工艺的经济可行性与环境影响

  • (6)研究生物塑料及前体在包装材料、农业应用及3D打印等领域的开发与应用
