Editor Biographies Skip slideshow Shou-Jiang Gao Editor-in-Chief Dr. Gao received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Health from the University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux (1993), France, and Postdoctoral training in Parasitology with Dr. John Burand in the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (1993-1994) and in Tumor Virology with Drs. Yuan Chang and Patrick Moore in Columbia University (1994-1997). He was a faculty member at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (1997-2001: Assistant Professor; 2002-2006: Associate Professor; 2007-2011: Professor; 2009-2011: HEB Endowed Chair for Cancer Research), then at the University of Southern California (2011-20018: Professor). He is currently a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the Director of Cancer Virology Program of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Hillman Cancer Center and the Pittsburgh Foundation Endowed Chair for Cancer Therapy. Dr. Gao is an Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (2014-). Dr. Gao is an expert in viral oncogenesis. His laboratory studies the oncogenic mechanisms of tumor viruses with current focus on Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), which is associated with several AIDS-related malignancies including Kaposi’s sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma and a subset of multicentric Cattleman’s disease. The research areas include mechanism of viral oncogenesis, metabolic reprogramming, cancer inflammation, cancer angiogenesis, epigenetic and epitranscriptomic reprogramming, functions of viral microRNAs, mechanism of persistent infection and reactivation, viral entry, trafficking and signaling, microbiome in cancer and infection, identification of therapeutic targets, development of therapeutic agents, and KSHV epidemiology.
Hinh Ly Deputy Editor Hinh Ly received his B.S. and M.A. degrees with honors in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and his Ph.D. degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). He carried out his postdoctoral work at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), in the laboratories of Dr. Tristram Parslow (HIV researcher) and Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn (telomere researcher and 2009 Nobel prize winner in Physiology or Medicine). Prior to his current position as an Associate Professor of Virology and Immunology in the Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, Dr. Ly served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta. Dr. Ly's research interest has focused on virus-host interactions with an emphasis on host immune suppression by arenaviruses.
Dario Di Luca Associate Editor Dario Di Luca holds a degree in Biological Sciences, and is Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ferrara, Italy. His past research interests include herpes simplex virus biology and human papillomavirus oncogenesis. His current research interests focus on Human Herpesvirus 6 (pathogenic associations, molecular biology) and innate responses to herpesviruses.
Kathy Shair Associate Editor Kathy Shair holds a Ph.D. in Virology from the University of Cambridge, U.K. She is a gamma-herpesvirologist interested in Epstein-Barr virus-associated cancers. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and belongs to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Hillman Cancer Center, Cancer Virology Program.
William Rawlinson Associate Editor William Rawlinson is a clinician scientist recognised internationally for translational research into human CMV in pregnancy and other immune compromised clinical states. He established, and oversees, serology and virology clinical research programs, statewide transplant donor screening, and national quality programs for serology and biosecurity. The laboratory he directs studies pathogenesis of congenital CMV infection, clinical application of research findings to pregnant women and neonates, and novel antivirals. He is conjoint professor at UNSW with over 400 publications in basic research, diagnostic and clinical virology.
Jason Bodily Associate Editor Dr. Bodily received BS and MS degrees from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT and earned a PhD in Microbiology from Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. His postdoctoral work was in the laboratory of Laimonis Laimins at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA. Dr. Bodily’s research interests include the life cycle of human papillomaviruses, with a focus on mechanisms of persistence and the interaction of infected cells with the stromal microenvironment.
Weiming Yuan Associate Editor Dr. Yuan received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from University of Texas at Austin in 2000 working with Dr. Robert M. Krug on influenza pathogenesis. Then Dr. Yuan pursued postdoctoral training with HHMI Investigator Dr. Peter Cresswell working on the molecular mechanism of innate CD1d/NKT cells system at Yale University School of Medicine. In 2009, Dr. Yuan joined the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Keck School of Medicine at University of Southern California as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2016. Dr. Yuan's research focuses on how herpesviruses evade the CD1d/NKT cell system and how to harness human NKT cells for anti-viral and anti-tumor therapies.
Jian Sun Associate Editor Dr. Sun received his medical training from 1992-1997 and Ph.D training from 1997-2003. He is currently a professor and associate director in the Hepatology Unit, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China. He is also an associate director of clinical research center of Nanfang Hospital. The research interest covered the basic science and clinical management of hepatitis, liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Yuying Liang
Associate Editor Dr. Yuying Liang received Ph.D. degree in Genetics from University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada (2000), studying Rubella virus with Shirley Gillam. She conducted postdoctoral work on Kaposi’s Sarcoma Herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV8) in the laboratory of Don Ganem at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She was an Assistant Professor at Emory University and is an Associate Professor at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her research program focuses on the virus-host interactions of two RNA viruses with segmented genomes, arenavirus and influenza A virus, in viral replication, immune evasion, and pathogenesis, and the development of arenavirus-based novel vaccine platform.
Elgui de Oliveira Associate Editor Dr. Elgui de Oliveira has a major in Biomedical Sciences (1997) from the Botucartu Institute of Biosciences and a Ph.D. degree in Pathology from Botucatu Medical School (2002), both at São Paulo State University (UNESP), SP, Brazil. In 2003 he became faculty at the Botucatu School of Medicine, Department of Pathology, fully dedicated to teaching and research. He has experience in human Pathology, focus on Oncology and Molecular Pathology. His main research topics are Viral Carcinogenesis, Oncogenic DNA viruses, Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Kaposi Sarcoma Herpesvirus (KSHV), Environmental Carcinogenesis, and Cancer Biology. Dr. Elgui de Oliveira attended short-term training in world-class Institutions in North America, including the Children's & Women’s Hospital / University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada; 2004); Texas Children’s Hospital / Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX, USA; 2005); Hillman Cancer Center / University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA, USA; 2006), Weill Medical College / Cornell University (WMCCU; New York, NY, USA; 2007; 2008-2009), and the Whitehead Institute / Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA, USA; 2012). Since 2002 he is the principal investigator for the Viral Carcinogenesis and Cancer Biology Research Group at UNESP, a.k.a., ViriCan (http://ViriCan.Net).
