Dr. Johnston is a professor of medicine, infectious diseases, at Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Health Authority. She chairs Health Canada’s Steering Committee on Infection Control Guidelines and is a founding member of the Canadian Hospital Epidemiology Committee that, with Health Canada, operates the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program. She is also chair of the Specialty Committee in Infectious Diseases, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Johnston’s research interests include the epidemiology of hospital-acquired infections, including those due to antimicrobial resistant bacteria. She is co-investigator on a number of clinical trials involving HIV and/or HCV infected patients. Other projects have included the incidence and outcome of C. difficile-associated diarrhea, hemodialysis-related bloodstream infections, and incidence of severe respiratory illness admitted to acute care beds.
