Jason E. Camp was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Sciences at Huddersfield in September 2014. Dr Camp received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis in June 2000. During his undergraduate studies he conducted research on the synthesis of cyclophane molecules with extended conjugation and restricted rotation as probes for optoelectronic properties as an UCEAP Undergraduate Research Fellow supervised by Prof. Geoffrey T. Crisp (University of Adelaide, Australia). He also completed an honours project with the support of Professor Alan L Balch (UC Davis) that focused on the synthesis of substituted Fe(III) octaethylporphyrins followed by reaction with O2 and H2O2 to model haem degradation. Following graduate studies with Professor Robert Williams at Colorado State University he completed his PhD in 2008 under the supervision of Professor Steven M. Weinreb at The Pennsylvania State University. During his PhD studies Dr Camp conducted synthetic studies directed towards the total synthesis of the chartellamide and chartelline family of marine natural products and developed a novel inter- and intramolecular copper-promoted halogenselective N-vinylation methodology. Following his PhD, Dr Camp undertook postdoctoral research with Professor Donald Craig (2008-2009) at Imperial College London, which focused on the reactivity of de-aromatised furans and indoles synthesised via a decarboxylative Claisen rearrangement. Jason began his independent career as a Lecturer at the University of Nottingham (2009-2013) and then at Queen Mary University of London (2013-2014). His continuing research interests are in the area of sustainable chemical synthesis; specifically the use of noble metals in multifaceted catalysis processes and the development of novel catalytic methods based on the ability of simple sugars to power catalytic reactions, sugar-powered catalysis (see, Research and Publications sections for more details).

Catalytic reactions are widely used in all areas of contemporary synthesis to provide access to the range of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials on which our society depends. This is in spite of their reliance on often toxic and expensive reagents and excessive waste production. Our broad research aim is to develop mild and sustainable processes, whilst incurring minimal costs in terms of time, expense and to the environment. This aim is being realised in my research group though investigations in two major areas: (a) the development of highly active metal nanoparticle catalysts derived from simple, renewable sugars and (b) a multifaceted catalysis approach to synthesis that optimises efficiency through the use of a metal to catalyse multiple steps of a synthetic process.
