Our research interest is to employ chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology and surface science to tackle the challenges in electrochemical energy storage and conversion. We strives to understand material structures and properties at solid/liquid interfaces under electrochemical conditions and to establish design principles for new and improved electrocatalysts and battery materials for the electrochemical conversion reactions of carbon dioxide, water, hydrogen, lithium, sulfur, nitrogen, and hydrocarbons. Research Directions in Catalysis: ·Designing heterogeneous electrocatalysts with molecular sites ·Developing multi-component catalyst materials utilizing strong metal-oxide, metal-phosphide and metal-metal interactions for synergistically enhanced electrocatalysis ·Investigating materials synthesis, solid state chemistry, surface structure and electrocatalytic reactivity of transition metal phosphosulfides Research Directions in Battery Materials: ·Investigating surface chemistry in lithium-sulfur batteries ·Designing cathode materials for long-cycle lithium sulfur batteries ·Developing electrochemically reversible lithium metal electrodes for high-energy batteries Research Directions in Advanced Characterization and Mechanistic Studies: ·In-situ and operando spectroscopic and microscopic studies of electrocatalyst and battery electrode materials under working conditions ·Discovering restructuring-induced electrocatalytic reactivity
