In my second year of medical school, I participated in a simulation session with 5 other students. Dan, a state-of-the-art mannequin, white male, moulaged with an IV, worth about a quarter of a million dollars, with skin the color of mashed potato and roughly the same resistance as a Tupperware lid, blinked back at me. Unbeknownst to us, for the purposes of this session, Dan was programmed to “crash,” or become clinically unstable, and then die. The point was to learn to flail calmly, use our limited knowledge of critical care medicine, and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
