Establishing Viscosity-Involved Formula of Mass Transfer Coefficient for Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Battery

High-concentration organic electrolytes feature a high viscosity, which impedes the mass transfer process and, thus, deteriorates the performance in both organic electrosynthesis and aqueous organic redox flow battery (AORFB). In this work, the empirical formula of the mass transfer coefficient (Sh = 0.0511Re0.487Sc0.537) is established by involving the viscosity and velocity, which is applicable to a wide range of viscosity from 1.45 to 65.5 mPa·s. By incorporating the formula, the numerical simulation on the AORFB’s performance agrees well with the experimental data, fully demonstrating its validity. The work provides a valuable guidance for the design of the electrolyte composition, the innovation of stack structure and the optimization of operating conditions in AORFBs.
